The Royston Choral Society includes a number of singing couples who share a love of music as well as each other; indeed, some came together through music. Partners often encourage each other with practice and attendance at rehearsals; it would be interesting to be a fly on the wall if they were cast away together! Below, Peter Harris shares his Desert Island selection, and Linda adds her own particular favourites at the end.

Who hasn’t thought what music they would chose if cast away on a remote island by BBC Radio 4? If you haven’t, now’s the time and there’s lots of inspiration to be had from the pre-thinking of other mere mortals like us.

This song, based on Michael Rosen's poem These Are The Hands, sung by the Commoners Choir celebrates the people who do the (often unrewarded) everyday jobs and services that benefit us all, especially during lockdown. Watch it here

The shows must go on, we hope.......

At Royston Choral Society we’re making very tentative plans for the coming season. It is, of course, impossible to predict yet when rehearsals and concerts might be able to restart but, assuming that might be in the autumn, we’re proposing three concerts in the next 12 months. Watch the RCS website and social media for updates.

2020 would have been the composer’s 250th birthday. In preparation for the great day in December, there’s nothing to stop us listening and learning while in isolation.

Listening: While is self-isolation, members of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra play Ode to Joy - a piece which became the European Union’s official anthem in 1985.
