What is your earliest memory of music in your life?

When the water boards were being privatised in the 1980s, I remember Handel’s Water Music being used in their adverts. I liked it so much that it cemented my preference for classical music.

What was your first 'public performance' of music/ drama/ or both?

I would have been about 9 years old, it was Christmas and I sang the treble solo for Darke’s In the Bleak Mid Winter. Ironically, my second ever solo performance was about five years later when I sang the tenor solo in the same piece.

Who is your favourite composer/ songwriter, and why?.

I have 2 favourite composers. Faure and Mozart. Faure’s Cantique de Jean Racine frequently moves me to tears. It is such an emotive piece of music. Faure’s works have the capability to captivate me and make me stop what I am doing when they come on the radio. Mozart’s works fill me with awe and amazement. His ability to write such beautiful and emotionally evocative works will never be surpassed.

What composition/ piece/ song would you recommend to a friend to brighten up their day?

Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, a piece I have had the fortune to sing in the past. The joy that emits from all four movements is immeasurable. There is a reason why Ode to Joy comes from there!!
